Varah Temple

The Varah Temple in Pushkar (Rajasthan, India) is dedicated to Lord Vishnu of the Hindu Trinity. The Hindu Trinity is made up of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva. Varah is the Sanskrit for wild boar, Hindu mythology speaks of incarnations of the gods and goddesses. The Varah is one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu.

The original twelfth century Varah Temple had been ransacked by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The Varah Temple was rebuilt, on a grand scale, in the eighteenth century by Raja Sawai Jai Singh II.

The imposing statue of a human male with the head of a wild boar is quite interesting. The pig happens to be an unholy or a dirty animal for any devout Muslim, quite understandably, emperor Aurangzeb was reputed to have been disappointed with the statue !

Pushkar is often included in Golden Triangle tours. There are roads linking Pushkar to important cities like Jaipur, and Delhi. It is hoped that the planned expressway from NOIDA to Agra, would further quicken travel to Rajasthan by road. NOIDA is located very close to Delhi. The nearest airport is located at Jaipur. The Ajmer railway station links Pushkar to other important tourist centers like Jaipur, and Agra.
