The other name of Pushkar fair is “Pushkar ka Mela” and one of the primary reason for Pushkar festival being so popular is that it is world's largest camel fair. Here camels are brought for trade purposes and the animals are dressed with bright and colorful ornaments. There are competitions too in the fair with camels, where the camels are supposed to participate in a race. For all these purposes, thousands of camels are present here.
History has it that, Pushkar is the only place in the country which had a temple of Lord Brahma. The mythical record says that Lord Brahma was in search of a peaceful abode to perform a yagna, or a fire service. During his search, a lotus fell from Lord Brahma's hand on the ground and suddenly water sprang out from that spot. Pushkar is one such place from where Brahma performed yagna. Since, Brahma is an important God in the Hindu mythology, the worship of Lord Brahma increased since the earlier period. The Pushkar lake is a holy ghat to the Hindus and there are 52 ghats on all the four sides of the lake. Pilgrims take a holy dip into this lake during the festival days. During the festival days of Pushkat fair, Kartik Purnima, the otherwise silent city wakes to a different life. The fair bustles with huge crowd of pilgrims as well as regular visitors.
