The fort was built on the Trikuta Hills by a Bhati Rajput ruler, Jaisal after whom the city has been named. The fort is made of sandstone and its massive structure has given it the nickname 'The Golden Fortress'. Inside the fort, there is a bustling city with almost entire population living in it. The fort has palaces, Jain temples in it. Jaisalmer Fort has plenty of entrances commonly known as the Pols.



Other Jaisalmer attractions are the havelis that have delicately carved lattice works on the windows and balconies. The insides of these havelis too are decorated beautifully. The most famous Jain temple is the Parswanath Temple which has carvings of animals and human forms. The Gadsisar Lake is a picnic spot for the residents and as recreation, one can indulge in boating. The desert sands gives you a very unique feel of vastness in Jaisalmer.
